祖父宅の二階に上がれば従兄弟が来てしまうので。
時には、伯父が休み時間に来る事もあったので、誰も居ない時間は祖父の居間で休んでいる事がありました。
けれど、３～５分置き位に一度、天井から冷たい何かが私の体に落ちてきました。
ポトリ！と落ちて来た物を見ると、細長い茶色いゴキブリでした。それが数分間隔で落ちてくるのです。泣きそうでした。
虫は嫌いじゃなかったのですが、以来、物凄い勢いで大嫌いに成っていきました。

ゴキブリと同じくらい、非常に多かったのがネズミです。
今にして思っても、かなり不衛生なお店だったと思います。ネズミは良く子供を産んでいました。
その日も、じじが生まれたばかりの、まだ血の付いているネズミの赤ちゃんを取り出してきました。
それを、一つ年下の従姉妹と私の目の前で、砂糖水に付けて食べてしまいました。
じじは、酔っていました。私たちが驚くのが楽しかったのか、嬉しそうに全部の赤ちゃんを食べてしまいました。
物凄く、いろんな意味でショックだったのを、覚えています。

じじは酔うと、自分の息子のへその緒も食べてしまう悪癖があったそうです。
