時は、第二次世界大戦。
終戦直後の東京。
信州の疎開で数年間。
のびのびと暮らしていたチトラ達は、東京へ戻ってみて驚いた。
辺り一面の瓦礫や、焼け跡。
瓦礫はところどころ、一か所ずつにまとめられていた。
赤いレンガは、ところどころ残っていた。
東海道の女郎宿一帯は、壊滅状態だった。
代わりに、木賃宿が以前よりも賑わっていた。
だけど、幼いチトラに取っては
そんなことよりも、父親が会社をクビになったことのほうが衝撃的だった。
この時代、運転免許所を持っているだけで仕事にあぶれることはなく。
かなりの高給取りだった。
その父親がクビになったのだ。
父親は、足の指を欠損していたので、戦争には徴兵されなかった。
それが動機の一つとなり、水代わりに酒を飲むようになっていた。
近所では有名な酒乱だった。
当然、会社でも酒を飲み。
酒を飲みながら、運送会社の仕事をするので、トラブルが尽きなかった。
何度も何度も、解雇宣告を受けては、母が父の会社へ駆けつけて土下座をし。
謝り続けて、なんとかクビになることだけは赦してもらってきたが、
会社も度重なる父の酒癖の悪さに堪忍袋の緒が切れて、
ついにクビになりました。
母は、働かない父に代わって
家族を養うために、
表向きは、「 甘味屋 」をやって
裏では、「 闇屋 」をやりました。
（ ここから先は、父の事を「 親父 」。 母の事を「 お袋 」と書きます。 ）
当時を振り返ってみると。
お袋の気持ちが思い出される。
親父もお袋も、長男長女のようなものだったので。
どちらも両親は早くに他界し、
親父とお袋が幼い兄弟たちの親代わりでもあった。
お袋は、自分の幼い兄弟たちと、
親父の幼い兄弟たちに、分け隔てなく接した。
東京へ来れば、自分の食事を削っても
兄弟達に食べさせ、就職するとなればギリギリの生活から、
新しい服代などを捻出したりしていた。
お袋は、警視庁のトップクラスになった弟に、
「 迷惑がかかるから絶対に！犯罪は犯すな 」と、
口がすっぱくなるほど、毎日のように言い聞かせられた。
そんなお袋が、自分の兄弟たちに心配をかけないようにして
一人で考え
さびしさにも耐え
悶え苦しみながら
家族を守り抜いていたお袋の心痛がよく解ります。
お袋は夜中に、誰にも見られないようにして
口に手ぬぐいを噛みしめ、
声を噛み殺して泣いていた姿を思いだします。
私だけが、夜中に一人、お袋が泣く姿を見た慟哭の姿でした。
親父は、「 呑む、打つ、買う 」の酒乱でした。
